Our History

Originally named the White Hart, our rich history dates back to its beginnings as a private residence. The transformation from a home where brewing took place using water from the river and nearby well to a welcoming alehouse with an open kitchen and fireside for drinkers marked the evolution into a licensed public house by 1719.

Our town of Keynsham once experienced an extraordinary event on a warm summer evening, as the normally tranquil atmosphere was disrupted by the news of Monmouth’s army advancing towards King James II. Seeking shelter from heavy rain, Monmouth’s rebels, some 9000 strong, found respite in Keynsham, with the White Hart Inn, now known as the Lock Keeper, serving as a guard post as it had during the English Civil War.

Throughout history, flooding has been a recurring challenge in our local area, notably culminating in the significant flood of 1968. Prior to this event, the main road to Keynsham High Street passed directly in front of the pub’s main entrance, even through what is now the car park. Fortunately, the construction of a new road on the opposite side of the building ensured safer passage, avoiding the inconvenience stepping onto the main road after enjoying a few drinks!

Delving into more recent decades, it’s intriguing to learn that our downstairs cellar once housed a popular nightclub in the 1970s. While it may be difficult to envision now, many of our loyal patrons fondly reminisce about their experiences dancing and reveling at Barges Cellar Club. Their nostalgic anecdotes offer a glimpse into the vibrant social scene of bygone days, enriching the tapestry of our pub’s history.
